Hey, Friends. I decided that my blog should get a facelift since, like me, it is aging. I am admittedly struggling with Wordpress but hopefully I will get the hang of it soon. I have figured out how to post - I just can't figure out how to add pictures in the sidebars, etc. The page is up and running, though I hope to make it more visually pleasing very soon.
Here's the address: http://liwinpurgatory.wordpress.com.

Progress!

Thanks to all of you for your wonderful support and suggestions. Once again, this community has helped save my sanity. :-)
The suggestions from that book are definitely working. Plus, I assume that the growth spurt is finally over. Tuesday night he only woke up twice - I fed him quickly and he went right back to sleep. Last night he only woke up once - a RECORD in this house!! ANd he has been going down relatively easy for his nap and at night. HE was so happy yesterday that he smiled most of the day - the good sleep is paying off for him, too. I have literally forced him to spend every waking moment with his snuggly bear blanket and I have actually seen him use it to calm himself. I have been breathing sighs of relief for over a day now. I am starting to feel a bit more human again. Tuesday was the type of day I knew I would have as a mother but hoped that I wouldn't. I did alot of screaming in the hallway outside of C's bedroom. I am not proud of it but it was better than throwing myself out the window, which I considered for a fleeting moment.
I attached a few pics from late December/early January so you can see how cute my little man is. It's nice to see his smile again and have the energy to smile back at him!!

I am going a little crazy here....
So, on top of taking such short - and few naps - every day, Baby C has decided to give up the one and only 4 or 5-hour stretch of sleep every night. He hasn't slept longer than 3 hours in one stretch since last Tuesday or Wednesday night. I am exhausted and have spent much of this morning in tears. He seems to be exhibiting the characteristics of a growth spurt - interrupted sleep, eating more often, frustrated at feedings, irritable, etc. He better plump up after all of this. Let's hope my sanity survives!!!
A friend of mine bought me "Sle.eping Through the Night" as a gift when she learned I was pregnant. I know that she adheres to the very strict schedule approach so I hadn't really picked it up because that's not how I want to parent. I hope to help Baby C develop good habits and hope to live according to regular patterns, but I simply refuse to believe that any human being can or should be regulated on strict eating and sleeping schedules.
But, in desperation, I started reading the book last night. I do plan to try many of the suggestions. I realized that Baby C needs a positive association in order to help him soothe himself to sleep. So I will hold a great little blankey when I feed him from now on. And right now he is in crib in the hopes that he will take a nap. I go in periodically to soothe him but he's clearly tired and I want him to learn how to go to sleep on his own. IT's not as if he never falls asleep without eating or rocking or soothing - he does. But it needs to be the norm instead of the exception.
Please don't judge me, but I really want to let him cry it out. Every time I go in his room, I want to SCREAM and yell. I did yell at the dog at one point and I emailed my husband begging him to come home early so that I can take a long nap. I just really want to speed up the process of him learning how to self-soothe. I desperately need to start getting 5-6 hours of sleep in a row again. A couple of job leads look promising and I simply don't see how I could work given the type of sleep I am getting. I went for a second interview yesterday that involved a 2-hour strategy exercise and I was utterly exhausted when I got home. And then slept in 1-hour increments through the night.
MY thought is that Baby C is overtired, too, since he hasn't made up for the sleep he is losing at night. So I am dedicated to getting him to take a nap this afternoon. He took a typically short one this morning but it is clearly not enough. The book said that it can take as long as an hour the first time that you try to get them to self-soothe by checking on them every 5 minutes or so. I am willing to try that.
I don't even know if this post makes sense...mostly I needed to vent. But can anyone promise me that this will not last forever? That I will once again be able to sleep for longer than 2-hour intervals and that he will eventually sleep through an entire night??????

Can 5 minutes really be a nap?
When I say that Baby C takes short naps, I am not kidding. Or exaggerating. This kid can recharge in the blink of an eye. It will be a blessing for him when he has a stressful job and needs a little cat nap to get a second wind but for his mother, well, not so much.
I am taking a 5-week infant massage class. It is relatively cheap and it means that C and I have something to do every Thursday. One of the woman in the group was telling me that her 7-week old son would sleep for 3 hours if she would hang out with him on the bed for an hour. "THREE HOURS??" I said, not able to mask my excitement and jealousy.
You see, Baby C typically takes 3 30-minute naps during the day. Rarely, he takes an hour or 90-miunte nap, but that usually involves being rolled around in a cart and riding in the car. When I tell people this, they respond hopefully: "but he sleeps through the night, right?" Well, no. He does not. Usually he is asleep for the night by 9pm, though it varies. And then he is up around 3am and then every two hours after that. But some nights, like last night, he was up at 11pm, and then 1:30am, then 3am, then 6:3oam, etc. It's a challenge for someone like me who loves sleep so much.
And often he sleeps for 5 minutes. I will be fooled into thinking that he is about to give me 25 minutes of freedom, so I put him in his crib. And then in 5 minutes I hear him. I go back in and hope that it is one of the times that I can put the pacifier in his mouth and he will doze off again. But he gives me the "wow, I feel refreshed" smile.
My son is awesome. If there was a better word, than I would use it. I adore him. He's sweet and happy and absolutely loves to smile. And he clearly likes me. He seeks me out to smile. And he tries to sing when I sing, especially twinkle twinkle little star. He likes to smile at other people, he loves when people talk to him, etc. But a day filled with very short breaks gets frustrating. He gets bored so easily now. I need to keep him occupied so that I can write cover letters and send resumes. It's not easy. Like now. He doesn't want to sit here with me. And he doesn't want to hang out in his vibrating chair.
So off I go to entertain him....my life is lived in short segments. Will this cause me to develop a short attention span?

Some Pictures of My Favorite Little Man

Because I have been promising....here's an array of pics.....they range from a few days old to two months old. You can probably see that he has grown from roughly 6 pounds to 11 pounds. He's starting to look more like his own person and less like a little newborn baby. Damn I adore this little person and would do almost anything to see his smile.... He's simply awesome. :-)
No doubt you will be impressed by Mr. LIW's talented work....but don't ask why they appear in different sizes. Mr. LIW must have saved them that way. Oh well, at least you get to see what Baby C (and me, in one pic) look like these days.

It has been a long time, I know.....
I just haven't felt a strong enough urge to blog. Life is relatively good yet largely all-consuming. Baby C is growing, though he is still low on the chart for weight. The pediatrician isn't too happy with the 7% percentile, but I keep telling her that Mr. LIW was a naturally skinny person until college. I have considered changing pediatricians because, in all honesty, I don't really like her. She's the type of person that I simply wouldn't be friends with. I feel like she is insecure and plays on my own worries about Baby C. I am going to stick with her in the meantime because her location is incredibly convenient (which is a big deal when you live in Boston), but we are planning to move north of Boston in the next year or so and I will certainly change then. I am trying to schedule appointments so that Mr. LIW can come along because he puts everything into perspective better than I do.
We don't plan to put our house on the market until I find a new job, which I don't expect to be anytime soon given how bad the market is around here. I have a handful of leads but I have played this game before and have learned not to get my hopes up. It's alot like infertility, really. One day something looks promising - the next day hopes are dashed. I am veteran and a little bit jaded at this point. So I am trying to regard job searching as simply another task, like cleaning the house. It works some of the time but it continues to cause me a good amount of stress.
But overall, I am ok. Once I get unemployment (after a week, I STILL can't get through to apply over the phone. The lines are busy!), things will be fine. It seems that I can get 30 weeks of unemployment, which is comforting. Since MR. LIW and I cut back significantly once I got the "you are being laid off" call, and the company paid my maternity leave through the end of 2008, we are fine financially. Unemployment will make it entirely manageable.
Even though there are parts of being home full-time that I don't enjoy, I am surprised to find that I like it over half of the time. It's great to witness every minor and major change in Baby C. I absolutely live for his smile. I love the fact that, most of the time, I only have to catch his eye and smile for him to reciprocate. He's a very vocal baby and is really starting to speak up when we read to him. He's incredibly curious, which makes getting him to nap while with other people or in other places (unless he is being rolled in a carriage) nearly impossible. It doesn't appear that he will ever be a regular long napper during the day - he takes a series of 25- to 30- minute naps throughout the day - but he has been sleeping better at night. As long as I can prevent him from getting overtired, there are few meltdowns.
Parenting is a challenge, for sure. I continue to feel like I am guessing most of the time. But I can't tell you how grateful I am that I waited until my 30's to have a child. I know I am a better mother because of it. And, if I was going to be laid off for a period of time, I couldn't have planned it better. At least I have the best reason in the world to be home. I truly love being a mother. And I love this little man SO much more than I ever thought I could love another person. I would, without a moment's hesitation, give my life for this little guy. He's the best thing that has ever happened to me.
I realize that I haven't added any pics of Baby C. Mr. LIW has the pictures saved in a way that cannot be easily accessed. I need to get him to prepare a couple for me to upload. Stay tuned because I plan to do that very soon.
Love to all of you!!

Howdy, Strangers
Hello, my dear blogger friends.
Baby C is doing really well these days! He lost a significant amount of weight after he came home, thanks to the fact that he preferred to sleep instead of eat and the fact that my ni*ples turned into blistered, bleeding sores. But we stuck it out and his weight is on the rise now. At 7lbs, 13 ounces, though, he is still thin for his age. But Mr. LIW was underweight until college so I assume Baby C will follow in his footsteps. At least it doesn't appear that we will have to worry about childhood obesity.
Speaking of weight, at least the pain of nursing was balanced by the fact that 20lbs melted off of me within a few weeks. I am getting used to the jiggly belly but I need to lose another 8 pounds before I can fit into my non-maternity pants. Luckily, my non-maternity jeans fit because they sit on my hips. As for other clothes, I may be in maternity pants for a while.
Taking care of Baby C has been much easier than recovering from childbirth. He's a generally happy baby and usually sleeps for a good 4-hour segment until the wee hours of the morning. I never know what I will deal with after midnight - one to two hour naps - but I have learned to go to bed early to take advantage of some uninterrupted sleep. Mr. LIW helps out alot on weekend nights so that I can get a normal night's sleep, which is awesome. Baby C takes much shorter naps during the day unless he is being pushed around in a shopping cart so I don't nap much. But, with Mr. LIW's help and incredible patience, new motherhood isn't as tough as I had feared.
As for my recovery, well, I have decided not to tell the entire birth story because it's so painful to think about. Here's a brief summary. Basically, the prostaglandins I was given to induce labor led to unrelenting and excruciating back pain, which I endured for nearly 24 hours. Baby C was facing up so his skull was pressing on my sacram. The contractions were frequent enough to go to the hospital that night and I stuck to my natural chaildbirth plan until the next afternoon when the contractions became more intense once the midwife broke my water. Baby C was in NO hurry to arrive and my progress was painstakingly slow. Thanks to an epidural, I was able to get some rest. If it wasn't for that, I never would have been able to deliver him v*ginally. At one point, we thought his head was stuck and I was told to prepare for plan B. But, thanks to my sheer stubbornness and the patience of the midwives, I was able to avoid a C-section. Baby C's heart rate never indicated stress, so I was resolved to hang in there. But there were many - and I mean MANY - dark moments. So much so that I believe I have a mild case of PTSD from the experience. The staff agreed that back labor is the worst and that they expect women to resort to pain relief in those situations because there is no relief otherwise. I was prepared to stick out the pain in 1 to 3 minute segments but not to have CONSTANT pain and then contractions on top of it. Anyway, I am proud of myself for sticking it out and glad that Baby C turned his head in the 11th hour and came out healthy. I would have preferred not to have to push for four hours (talk about requiring every ounce of strength I have ever had) but I am told I was lucky to endure only second-degree tears from so much effort. Only now, though, has the perine*l pain/discomfort almost fully subsided, though. I didn't realize that I was going to be so uncomfortable for so long. And that my IBS would be screwed up for so long as well.
So those first two weeks at home were an absolute blur. My sensitive skin proved to make bfing torturous but, once again, my stubbornness shifted into gear and we made it work. Baby C is instatiable much of the time, though, so we do occasionally supplement with formula, especially at night. I am proud that we have made this work and that I can bf with minimal discomfort now.
Just as I was starting to feel better, though, I got a dreaded phone call. I learned that I had been laid off. My company laid off 20% of its workforce because it lost so many clients due to the freefall on Wall Street. I had worried that this would happen since so many of the agency's clients are VC-backed. Since I had so few clients left, my head was on the chopping block. For those of you who have been following this blog for a while, I have taken this hard. Job searching again? ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME???? What is the universe trying to teach me here? I am not warming up to the need to sell myself once again.
The SVP, who is my mentor of sorts, assured me that performance was not a factor. And finding out who else had been laid off validated this. And he is helping me tremendously in my job search. I have a couple of leads already - one reached out to me directly (and the SVP happens to have a friend who works there), another through a recruiter - so there's progress. I have a couple of initial phone interviews set up for the next couple of days but I am SO unmotivated. I feel so demoralized and simply don't have the energy or the drive to sell myself AGAIN. I will do my best for sure and I hope that my feelings about this process don't ruin my chances. Luckily, the company is sticking to its promise to pay for my maternity leave so I will get paid through the end of this year and could probably receive unemployment starting in January. We can't afford for me to be unemployed much beyond that but I am hoping to be home until February. Of course, if a relatively decent job comes up I will have to take it. What choice do I have? This economy is dismal so I need to take any good job that is offered to me. I would love to get back into government but there are simply no jobs in that arena. I just hope that my new job has great benefits and is even more supportive of working remotely. One of my leads appears to offer these perks so maybe it will work out? I honestly have trouble getting emotionally invested in any of these opportunities. And I can't shake off the fact that, though I did great work and received such awesome feedback at my company, I was still disposable. I need to become one of those people who works simply for a paycheck!!!!
I will post updated pictures of Baby C soon. I still can't believe how beautiful - and BLOND - he is. He doesn't look as much like Mr. LIW as I thought. I think there might actually be a little bit of me in his face. He is starting to smile now, which makes me wonder if there is anything more awesome in this world!!!!
Thanks to all of you for your wonderful congratulations!! Mr. LIW and I enjoyed and appreciated them.
XOXOXO
